The Warren Commission (WC) claimed that Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) assassinated President John F. Kennedy (JFK) on November 22, 1963. They further claimed that he shot and killed Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit (JDT) on the same day. Their "investigation" provided no supporting evidence for these claims, and left a ton of questions regarding the conclusion that they reached.
Here is another one.

Why did the Warren Commission (WC) ask Michael Paine (MP) about a telephone call that never happened?
MP called his estranged wife Ruth Paine (RP) shortly after the assassination. Supposedly a telephone operator listened in on the call, but that was just cover to hide that the FBI were tapping the Paine residence. Whether this was to monitor telephone calls between LHO and Marina Oswald or for a broader reason we don’t know, but this would mean that the FBI had much more information on LHO’s activities than they let on about. Keep in mind that LHO called Marina almost every night.
Here is what was heard on Friday November 22, 1963.

"... a telephone call was intercepted in Dallas in which a "male voice was heard to say that he felt sure Lee Harvey Oswald had killed the President but did not feel Oswald was responsible, and further stated, `We both know who is responsible.' " ... the tapped telephone numbers were those of Michael Paine and his wife, Ruth Paine, the woman who was playing host to Marina Oswald at the time of the assassination." (Summers, Conspiracy, p. 103 (Chapter 7, "A Sphinx for Texas.") Summers cites Warren Commission Document 206, p. 66, which he says was declassified in 1976.)

When MP was questioned about this call by the WC lawyer, Wesely Liebeler, he changed the day of the call to November 23, 1963.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now, there has been a report that on November 23, 1963, there was a telephone call between a man and a woman, between the numbers of your residence and the number of your office, in which the man was reported to have said in words or substance, "We both know who is responsible for the assassination." Have you been asked about this before?
Mr. PAINE - I had heard that--I didn't know it was associated with our numbers. I had heard a report that some telephone operator had listened in on a conversation somewhere, I don't know where it was. I thought it was some other part of the country.
Mr. LIEBELER - Did you talk to your wife on the telephone at any time during Saturday, November 23, on the telephone?
Mr. PAINE - I was in the police station again, and I think I called her from there.
Mr. LIEBELER - Did you make any remark to the effect that you knew who was responsible?
Mr. PAINE - And I don't know who the assassin is or was; no, so I did not.
Mr. LIEBELER - You are positive in your recollection that you made no such remark?
Mr. PAINE - Yes.
A conversation between a man and a woman? The phone numbers were for the Paine residence and MP’s office so who else could it have been? Why the vague man and woman comment? Liebeler also moved the call to the next day as well. MP testified that he called her on the 22nd.
Mr. PAINE. …I called Ruth immediately after getting back just to see that she would turn on the radio and be clued in with the news, but this was before the Texas School Book Depository Building was mentioned, to my knowledge, and she was already watching the news. So we communicated nothing at that time.
This comment is in regards to him hearing about the assassination while at lunch. When he returned to his office he called RP. This was on the 22nd. He again says that he called after hearing about the assassination.
Mr. LIEBELER – Did you call Ruth after you learned of the assassination and prior to the time that you heard Oswald----
Mr. PAINE – Yes, I did call her.
Mr. LIEBELER - What did you say and what did she say?
Mr. PAINE - We said very little. That must have been, I guess I called her immediately getting back to the lab, so she would be watching and listening and getting clued in to the news, start watching the news. That must have also been before the Texas Book Depository Building was mentioned because I would have mentioned that I didn't. I just--we said almost nothing except----
This testimony again shows that MP called RP on November 22. She too would testify that her husband called her on the day of the assassination.
Mrs. PAINE - Of Michael having telephoned to me after the assassination, He wanted to know if I had heard.
Mr. JENNER - Did he call you before he arrived at your home?
Mrs. PAINE – He called. He knew about the assassination. He had been told by a waitress at lunchtime. I don't know whether he knew any further details. whether he knew from whence the shots had been fired, but he knew immediately that I would want to know, and called simply to find out if I knew, and of course I did, and we didn't converse about it, but I felt the difference between him and my immediate neighbor to whom I have already referred, Michael was as struck and grieved as I was, and we shared this over the telephone.

It should be noted that the only telephone call between telephone number CR 5-5211, Arlington, Texas, and telephone number BL 3-16028, Irving, Texas, during the period November 22, 1963, to November 26, 1963, was the one call on November 22, 1963, which according to the telephone company records, indicate that Mrs. Michael Paine was called collect from CR 5-5211, the place of employment of her husband.[/u][/b]
Mrs. Ruth Paine...has previously stated that on November 22, 1963, at about 1:00 PM, her husband telephoned her from his place of business and advised her that President KENNEDY had just been shot. (Commission Document (CD) 385, p. 101)

This illustrates clearly that MP called RP around 1:00 p.m. on November 22, 1963. So why did Liebeler try and change this call to the next day? MP claimed that he called from the Dallas Police Department (DPD) on Saturday, November 23, but that would not have captured his business office phone number.
This was an overt attempt by the WC to try and hide the truth of this call because it pointed to a conspiracy.
Can any WC defender offer a reasonable explanation for why the WC tried to change the time and context of this call? If not, the conclusion of the WC is sunk again and after 10 years no WC defender has offered one.
