As we saw in a previous post in this series, New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison noticed a similarity between the address books of Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) and Clay Shaw when he acquired Shaw's during his investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK).
Here is a recap of that post.

New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison found this [the P.O. Box 19106 similarity] during his investigation into the murder of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) in the latter part of the 1960s. He would write this in his book On The Trail Of The Assassins.

…this odd term was revealed publicly when Shaw’s attorneys sought to have the address book returned to him. Our office opposed this move, and in our written opposition we called attention to an interesting fact: The citation of “P.O. 19106” appeared in Lee Oswald’s address book as well as Shaw’s.
After several days of silence, Shaw’s attorneys produced a man named Lee Odom, who at that time rented post office box number 174 in Irving, a suburb of Dallas. He stated that he was from Dallas and that, while P.O. Box 19106 had never been in his name, it had been used for several months by a barbeque company with which he was once associated.
Shaw’s attorneys,…picked it up from there and explained that Odom had once met Clay Shaw to discuss the possibility of promoting a bullfight in New Orleans. (Jim Garrison, On The Trail Of The Assassins, pp. 146-147 [hardcover edition])

Here is the notation in LHO’s notebook (Commission Exhibit (CE) 18).

The purpose of the previous post was simply to inquire why they both had the same notation in their address books. The purpose of this post is to look further into this issue.
Garrison notes several reasons why the excuse given by Shaw’s attorneys cannot be correct. Firstly, he said New Orleans was not a known location for bullfights. Secondly, Garrison knew from having completed a summary of all of Shaw’s activities that he had never promoted a bullfight before. The final reason is very interesting.

Finally, the bullfight explanation seemed weak when juxtaposed to the fact that virtually the same phrase, “P.O. 19106,” was memorialized forever on one of the pages of Oswald’s address book. The coincidence became even more suspicious when one considered that Lee Oswald had to have written his notation no later than 1963, the year he was murdered, and that as of 1963 Dallas had not yet acquired a post office box with a number as high as 19106.
To me, the explanation that Clay Shaw had written “P.O. Box 19106” in his address book because he was considering the possibility of treating the citizens of New Orleans to a bullfight and that Lee Oswald had written it in his address book years earlier for no reason at all stretched the limits of common sense by a long ways. Once again the people of this country were being asked to swallow a cannon ball, no matter how well lubricated. (Ibid., p. 147)

So what can be made of all of this? The most interesting part is that the P.O. Box number didn’t exist at the time LHO was alive, so how could he know about it then? I don’t think that it was a code for Jack Ruby’s telephone number as Garrison initially claimed as he even admitted that that was a mistake on his part. But since that box number didn’t exist, why did LHO write it in his address book then? It had to be either a reference or a code, but for what?
Perhaps it was a reference to a future box that was going to be setup for some kind of intelligence operation. Remember, LHO had no way of knowing that he would not live beyond November 24, 1963, at the time he made the notation. This wasn’t the only time this type of thing happened to LHO as we have to remember that he supposedly purchased a money order years before it was released.
In Shaw’s address book his notation included a name – “Lee Odom.” Shaw’s attorneys presented a man to Garrison and said that he was the Lee Odom in question. He rented a P.O. Box 174 in Irving, Texas. He said box 19106 was never under his name, but had been used for several months by a barbecue company. Odom supposedly also talked to Shaw about promoting a bullfight.
Does this sound reasonable to anyone? If Odom never rented that box, why was Shaw associating him with it in his address book then?
Could “Lee Odom" have been another code? I posit that maybe it was a combination of names. Perhaps it was “Lee" for LHO and “Odom" for FBI Agent Bardwell “Bob" Odum. I realize the spelling is different, but this could have simply been a mistake by Shaw. There is evidence that shows that the Paines, Michael and Ruth, were very close to Odum as they called him “Bob" when only close associates called him this. Was Odum LHO’s FBI handler or controller for real? Perhaps James Hosty was just cover. It is at least worth considering.
What do you think the significance of this issue is if any?
