The Church Committee (CC), named for its chairman Senator Frank Church, reviewed the performance of the Warren Commission (WC) as well as the intelligence agencies involved in the “investigation” of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) in 1964.
They were refreshingly honest as they wrote the following about the WC's efforts in 1964. Keep in mind that the WC elected not to have investigators of their own, therefore, they were totally reliant on the FBI, CIA, Secret Service and others to do this for them.

…The Committee has, however, developed evidence which impeaches the process by which the intelligence agencies arrived at their own conclusions about the assassination, and by which they provided information to the Warren Commission. This evidence indicates that the investigation of the assassination was deficient and that facts which might have substantially affected the course of the investigation were not provided to the Warren Commission or those individuals inside the FBI and the CIA, as well as other agencies of the Government, who were charged with investigating the assassination.
The Committee has found that the FBI, the agency with primary responsibility in the matter, was ordered by Director [J. Edgar] Hoover and pressured by higher government officials, to conclude its investigation quickly. The FBI conducted its investigation in an atmosphere of concern among senior Bureau officials that it would be criticized and its reputation tarnished. Rather than addressing its investigation to all significant circumstances, including all possibilities of conspiracy the FBI investigation focused narrowly on Lee Harvey Oswald. The term "investigation" is too generous as the FBI concluded its "investigation" in days (17) and that is not enough time to run down leads and look into the multitude of angles that this case offers. The CC correctly points out that pertinent information was withheld from the Warren Commission (WC), but how many people really believe that this matters? Wouldn't they have just ignored what it showed anyway IF it pointed to anything or anyone beyond Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO)? I sure think so.
As we saw in the first post in this series, the WC was under immense pressure to wrap up their "investigation" before they even formed. If the purpose was an honest inquiry into the death of President John F. Kennedy (JFK), why was there such a rush to close this case? No defender of the official narrative has ever successfully answered that question.
In fact, most do not even attempt to try. In no other case in modern times before November 22, 1963, has any case been "cinched" so quickly. In a matter of hours the Dallas Police Department (DPD), with a huge assist from the FBI and Secret Service (SS), had the case all locked up. LHO was guilty, all alone, of killing JFK. As an added bonus the DPD "proved" that he also shot and killed Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit (JDT) over in Oak Cliff just 45 minutes or so after gunning down JFK. The incredible police work that would make Scotland Yard pale in comparison just kept continuing too as they also solved the eight-and-half-month-old shooting of retired General Edwin A. Walker (EAW) as well! For those of you keeping scorecards at home, it was LHO too! The DPD was cleaning out their old cold cases with this one folks. LHO did it! Of course in the nearly nine months since the attempt on EAW the DPD never once suspected LHO, but what does that matter? LHO was a police department's dream.
Of course while the federal agencies were "assisting" the DPD (by illegally seizing evidence; releasing witnesses; intimidating other witnesses; telling witnesses what they saw and heard, etc...) they had NO jurisdiction for the murder of JFK at all! This means everything they touched, illegally seized, and took off with was compromised. None of it would have been allowed in a court of law as the chain of custody was eradicated by their actions. This is why LHO could NOT have a trial. Texas justice was imposed instead.
Whether you believe that LHO was innocent, involved in some way or guilty the principles and rights of this country should be paramount. LHO, like anyone accused of a crime, was entitled to his Constitutional rights. He never received them. In the short run, that hurt him, but in the long run that hurt every American as if his rights could be denied so can yours.
When the FBI is mentioned in connection with the "investigation" of JFK's assassination it really means J. Edgar Hoover (JEH). JEH was God at the FBI. Even if some of his agents wanted to investigate this case vigorously, and I am sure many did, he wouldn't allow it because HIS report (finished in 17 days if not sooner) already reached the conclusion that LHO acted alone. Anything that pointed elsewhere would make him look bad, and JEH didn't like to look bad. Just as he denied that organized crime existed for many years, and hated anyone that proved this notion to be preposterous (i.e. Robert F. Kennedy and JFK), he would have not looked kindly on any agent that made his conclusion look incorrect.
Therefore, this one man stunted an entire organization from doing its job in a fair and honest way. And then the defenders of the WC's conclusion have the gall to say that this crime was beyond a cover-up. JEH and President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) were just two men, powerful men, and they alone could do it and did. They were both part of the conspiracy based on their active parts in the cover-up phase. It can be argued, and has been, they were active in the planning phase as well, but without hard evidence I will not make that claim. However, they are guilty for their participation in the cover-up. The willful act of lying to the American people ruins the democracy. How can they ever be trusted again?
The WC gets all the blame, and they deserve much, but they never had a chance. They were sacrificial lambs themselves. They were told before they even formed it would be LHO and LHO alone. America has suffered ever since.
