The Warren Commission (WC) claimed Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) owned the alleged murder weapon. There was NO doubt about that according to them and their current day defenders. What did they base this on? The handwriting on the money order sent to Klein’s Sporting Goods (KSG), the application LHO filled out for his Dallas P.O. Box, and two fingerprint cards signed by LHO. One of the cards was from the time he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) on October 24, 1956, and the other one was from the time he was arrested for an altercation in New Orleans (August 9, 1963). That is it.
The WC defenders like to claim the order form was shown to be written by LHO too, but the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) did NOT even have that examined. Why? We shall soon see why.

The HSCA would conclude the following regarding the samples they examined.

The questioned documents panel that the money order and the post office box application were filled out by the same person and that the handwriting on them was identical to the handwriting on the two fingerprint cards signed by Oswald. On the basis of this analysis, the committee determined that Oswald bought the weapon in question from Klein’s Sporting Goods Co. (HSCA Report, p. 54)

This whole statement is totally doubtful as there are questions about the money order in the first place! As we have seen previously in other posts, the money order number--No. 2,202,130,462—was NOT ready for sale until LATE 1964 or EARLY 1965, so how in the world would LHO get this to use on March 12, 1963? Why is there NO mention of this issue by the committee?
Here is Commission Exhibit 788 for your review.
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/wc/wcvols/wh17/pages/WH_Vol17_0352a.jpg
Another issue this statement does NOT take into consideration that we have seen earlier in other posts, is that the post office the money order was allegedly purchased at was a good distance from where LHO worked at the time. The money order had a stamp of “12” on it which meant it was purchased in zone 12 which is miles from downtown Dallas where LHO worked. How did he get there if he did purchase it as the WC and HSCA claim? Did he get a ride to the post office in zone 12? Let’s check the WC testimony to see.
Mr. JENNER. Did you have any impression that he had an attitude of resentment toward anybody or anything or his lot in life?
Mr. OFSTEIN. Not extremely or exactly resentment. I would say he didn't get along with people and that several people had words with him at times about the way he barged around the plant, and one of the fellows back in the photosetter department almost got in a fight with him one day, and I believe it was Mr. Graef that stepped in and broke it up before it got started, but he was also offered rides by Mr. Graef, and I offered him a ride a couple of times either to his home or wherever he wanted to catch a bus, and I know that he always declined my offer of a ride.
Mr. JENNER. What did he say?
Mr. OFSTEIN. He said; no, he would go ahead and walk, and usually in the evening when he would leave he would say, "I am going up to the post office to pick up my mail", and a couple of times I would offer to give him a ride up this way, as it wasn't much out of my way and I have to come in this direction anyway to Live Oak before I turn, which is only about a block difference, and he always declined to ride and would walk.
We see he never took a ride from Mr. Ofstein, and this is what Mr. Graef said about LHO’s transportation habits.
Mr. JENNER So, you have no impression--I gather--as to whether he could or could not drive an automobile or how well he might do so?
Mr. GRAEF. No. The only impression that I have is that he rode the bus almost everywhere. I know--I'm pretty sure he did not have a car and he used to ride the bus.
What evidence did the WC offer us that shows LHO took a bus to zone 12 on the morning of March 12, 1963, to purchase a money order? NONE is the correct answer and they also did NOT give us any evidence showing anyone gave him a ride either. So how did LHO get to zone 12 to purchase a money that was NOT for sale for over a year and a half later then?
Another roadblock for the WC, and HSCA, in their claim is the timesheet for LHO from JCS for the day of March 12, 1963. This is known officially as CE-1855 and it shows us LHO was at work beginning at 8:00 A.M. that day. It also shows he worked the ENTIRE day and did NOT leave for any reason. Harry Holmes stated that the money order was mailed at 10:30 A.M. on the morning of March 12, 1963, but it was never asked of him HOW he knew this. The only time stamp would have been on the envelope but the original was NOT kept by KSG supposedly! How can any WC defender place LHO at the zone 12 post office between 8-10:00 A.M. on March 12, 1963, now? They can’t, thus, the claim he purchased this money order and that it displays his writing is ridiculous.
CE-1855: historymatters.com/archive/jfk/wc/wcvols/wh23/pages/WH_Vol23_0319a.jpg
We see LHO was at work by 8:00 A.M. so he could NOT have gone then or after to the post office in question. Now, WC defenders may claim he went earlier and then went to work, but that doesn’t work either as the HSCA gave us a document (segregated box of CIA files) that shows the window at the post office did NOT open before 8:00 A.M.!
www.maryferrell.org/mffweb/archive/viewer/showDoc.do?mode=searchResult&absPageId=1146838
This document clearly says the window did NOT open until 8:00 A.M. Of course this led to LHO “probably” lying about his time sheet, but what evidence was put forth for this claim? NONE is the correct answer.
If his writing was displayed on a money order NOT for sale on March 12, 1963, from a post office he could NOT have gotten too because he was at work at the time of the alleged purchase, and could NOT have mailed in time for KSG to receive when they claimed to receive it then it means someone FORGED the paperwork for him.
Finally, we come to the LAST issue regarding the money order. As we have seen previously in other posts, the money order was NEVER shown to be deposited into KSG’s banking account either. The only money order that had the amount of $21.45 on it (the amount on the alleged LHO money order to KSG) was on a deposit slip dated FEBRUARY 15, 1963! This is nearly a month BEFORE LHO allegedly ordered the rifle from KSG! The bottom line is this—NO one could show the alleged money order was ever deposited by KSG, thus, they cannot show a transaction took place that would result in sending LHO a rifle! Then of course we have the issue of the order form showing an order for a 36” Carbine and NOT a 40.2” short rifle like CE-139.
The HSCA, like the WC, was big on claims, but very short on evidence to support them. There are other issues that preclude LHO from ordering and receiving a 40.2” rifle too like KSG having NO 40.2” models in stock in March 1963 to send to LHO on purpose or by “mistake” as many WC defenders claim. Also, evidence has been put forth that shows KSG did NOT mount scopes on the 40” model as of March 1963, so where would LHO get a scope from (along with ammunition and a clip)?
We now come to the alleged order form. For years WC defenders have claimed that LHO filled it out and this proves he ordered the alleged murder weapon. This is ludicrous for several reasons. First of all, it shows an order for a 36” Carbine and NOT a 40.2” short rifle as CE-139 is! Secondly, since KSG did NOT keep the paper copy of the order form allegedly or the envelope it came in they could NOT say it was LHO’s handwriting at all! Obviously, the WC defenders IGNORE note 9 by the HSCA, which states the following.

9 The committee also attempted to have its handwriting experts analyze other documents, such as the order for the rifle and the envelope in which it was mailed. The originals had, however, BEEN DESTROYED, and microfilm copies that existed were NOT suitable for conclusive tests. (Note 9, HSCA report, p.54) (Emphasis added)

There is NO positive test showing the order form and envelope were ever filled out by LHO so why do WC defenders keep claiming he did? Here they are.

This post further shows the WC, and subsequently the HSCA, had NO evidence to support their claims that LHO ordered and received the alleged murder weapon. In fact, the evidence shows us something totally different—that LHO was framed and someone else filled this out for him!
