Why did the Warren Commission (WC) claim Sheriff’s deputy Seymour Weitzman was “mistaken” in calling the weapon he saw found a Mauser when he said the same thing the NEXT DAY in an affidavit?
Weitzman’s affidavit can be found in Commission Exhibit (CE) 2003. In his affidavit, SIGNED ON NOVEMBER 23, 1963, we see the following statement.

The rifle was a 7.65 Mauser bolt action equipped with a 4/13 scope, a thick brownish-black sling on it. (CE 2003, p. 228)

IF he was mistaken as claimed, why was he still saying it was a Mauser the next day? And why was he so specific about it being a 7.65 type?
Can any WC supporter explain this to me? When did he realize he was “mistaken”? I don’t know, but the WC felt fit to blame him for the mistaken identification over and over again even though NO one said they called it Mauser because of him!

Constable Deputy Sheriff Deputy Weitzman, who only saw the rifle at a glance and did not handle it, thought the weapon looked like a 7.65 Mauser bolt-action rifle. (WCR, p. 81)

For example, the rifle found on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository Building was initially identified as a Mauser 7.65 rather than a Mannlicher-Carcano 6.5 because a deputy constable who was one of the first to see it thought it looked like a Mauser. (WCR, p. 235)

Speculation.—The rifle found on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository was identified as a Mauser 7.65 by the man who found it, Deputy Constable Seymour Weitzman.
Commission finding.—Wietzman, the ORIGINAL SOURCE OF THE SPECULATION that the rifle was a Mauser, and Deputy Sheriff Eugene Boone found the weapon. Weitzman did not handle the rifle and did not examine it as close range. He had little more than a GLIMPSE of it and thought it was a Mauser, a German bolt-action rifle similar in appearance to the Mannlicher-Carcano…(WCR, p. 645) (Emphasis added)

As we have seen in numerous other posts in this series NO one said they identified the rifle as a Mauser because of Weitzman. NO one. So even if he was “mistaken”, so what? How does this account for all the other people and media outlets also calling it a Mauser? Also, the WC included testimony from Weitzman that shot down their OWN claim of him only seeing the rifle at a "glance!"
Finally, how can anyone look at the alleged murder weapon and see things like “MADE ITALY” and “6.5 CAL.” on it and arrive at it being a Mauser of 7.65 caliber?
