The House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) looked into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) in the late 1970s. They would recall a number of witnesses that had testified before the Warren Commission (WC) in 1964.
One of the most important of these witnesses was the wife of the accused assassin -- Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO). She was one of the most important witnesses for the WC in terms of making LHO appear guilty to the American people in 1964.
What would she tell the HSCA?
The HSCA Says...Marina Oswald Porter!

The first admission that Marina Oswald Porter (referred to as just Marina going forward) made was this.

Q. To your knowledge, as you sit here today, is there anything you testified before the Warren Commission which you now believe to be incorrect?
A. No; I never read my own testimony but whatever I said was the truth.
Q. ...Did anybody ever give you the transcripts of what you testified before the Warren Commission and let you read that transcript?
A. I had the privilege of reading my testimony, it was offered to me but I didn't read it.
Q. You never did?
A. No. (HSCA XII, pp. 321-322)
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/html/HSCA_Vol12_0163a.htm
She never read what she testified to? Why not? Notice how surprised Ken Klein of the HSCA was to this answer? Her claim that everything she said was the truth is also not correct as over the years much of what she testified to has been shown not to balance with the evidence.
She is asked which person introduced her to LHO in Russia, and notice how she basically shows that she might have just made a name up for the WC.
Q. Do you recall the name of the person who introduced you to Lee Harvey Oswald?
A. I forgot most of the Russian names. Do you have any names? Could you have any names with you? I can tell you if it is correct or not.
Q. Would it refresh your recollection if I told you you testified to the Warren Commission it was Yuri Mereginsky?
A. I don't remember anybody by that name, but it is probably correct.
Q. M-E-R-E-G-I-N-S-K-Y? Do you recall--
A. That is probably correct, but I don't remember it.
Q. When I say that name, do you remember the person?
A. No.
Q Nothing at all?
A. No,... (Ibid., pp. 324-325)

If she can't remember this guy and the name doesn't sound familiar at all, why did she tell the WC that was the guy that introduced her to LHO? This isn't a small detail or matter either given the circumstances of what would occur on November 22, 1963. It is vital to know how the accused assassin met a woman in Communist Russia during his "defection." Because if she can't name a person, and have that information verified, it leaves the door open for saying this was a setup by either American or Russian intelligence. This is why the HSCA kept trying to get her to answer in the affirmative about knowing the name.
So who did introduce Marina to LHO? She would say that it was just a coincidence that they met, but how do we know that for sure? We don't. They again ask her if she can remember the person and if Yuri Mereginsky was the person and she once more states that she cannot recall the person or the name.
As we have seen before in my "Statements That Sink The WC's Conclusions", Marina should never have been allowed to leave Russia and to enter the United States. She is asked about this.
Q. Was it unusual for a Soviet woman who had married an American to be granted permission to leave the country?
A. I was surprised they granted permission, I really was.
Q. Do you have any idea why you were granted permission?
A. I considered it just being lucky. (Ibid.)
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/html/HSCA_Vol12_0165a.htm
As we have seen there was no luck involved. This one issue shows that LHO was more than the American Government claimed he was. This was unheard of in 1962, and yet, it all went smoothly for Marina and LHO. Why? Can anyone provide a simple answer that makes sense? Especially when we remember that he was supposedly a defector, had renounced his U.S. citizenship, threatened to give away Top Secret information and she was a member of a Communist organization.
She is then asked about the visits she received from the FBI in November 1963.
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/pages/HSCA_Vol12_0165b.gif
Q. The Warren Commission questioned you and you testified that at certain times FBI agents spoke with you, is that correct?
A. I recall that we had visits from some men and since I didn't speak English, I have been told by Lee that it was FBI men. Then once that I remember, it was an agent who claimed to be from the FBI. It was Ruth Paine, the agent from the FBI came, and he spoke to me through her. She was the interpreter.
Q. What did she tell you the FBI man said?
A. He said--he asked questions if I had been approached by any foreign agent at any time since I arrived from Russia and would I tell him or call him right away if anyone would do such a thing.
Q. Do you recall the name of the FBI agent...Is the name James Hosty, familiar?
A. Yes; that is familiar, that is the name of an associate with the man who came to the house with Ruth Paine. (Ibid., pp. 326-327)
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/html/HSCA_Vol12_0165b.htm
What did she mean by "it was an agent who claimed to be from the FBI?" Were they not shown identification? If it wasn't an FBI agent, then who was it?
She would tell the HSCA that she was never contacted by the FBI at any time after she finished her testimony before the WC. (Ibid., 328) Why? Wasn't there anything that needed more checking after the rushed "investigation" the WC conducted.
Remember, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (JEH) said that this case would stay open for all time since there was no trial. That was quickly forgotten I guess.
They then mentioned the alleged note that LHO supposedly left with the FBI weeks before the assassination.
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/pages/HSCA_Vol12_0166b.gif
Q. Are you aware that a short time before the assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald delivered a note to the FBI office in Dallas addressed to agent Hosty?
A. When I heard this on the news, I was surprised
Q. When you heard it on the news, was that the first time that you ever knew anything about this?
A. That was news to me that a note like that even existed. I had my doubts because knowing a little bit of Lee's personality and my knowledge he had been annoyed by the FBI and wanted to be left alone, I wondered if he would go--...and threaten somebody with a note. (Ibid., p. 328)
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/hsca/reportvols/vol12/html/HSCA_Vol12_0166b.htm
She wasn't the only person suprised about this supposed note being left at the FBI Dallas office. This note was never shown to contain any threats and LHO was never shown to be the person that left it for Hosty. In fact, it was not even known about until 1975 when the Church Committee (CC) looked into it as Hosty said he destroyed it "upon orders to do so." She said that she never believed what the media reported (that it contained threats) and that he never mentioned doing anything like this.
She said that she didn't know about LHO asking for a FBI agent when he was arrested in New Orleans on August 9, 1963. She also said she wasn't surprised that he would do so.
She was asked if she had been contacted by anyone from the United States Government since she testified and she made an odd comment. She said, "Since I look back, I have been surrounded by FBI agents and Secret Service men all the time." (Ibid., p. 329) The interviewer made no big deal of this, but this is a big deal. Either she was receiving 24/7 protection from 1964 to 1978 (the time of the interview) or she was being watched/threatened to make sure she did not alter her testimony to the press. It is easy to be tough on her, but how many of us could withstand this kind of pressure? Not many I would think.
They asked her about their conversation the evening before the assassination. She confirmed that LHO brought up the idea of renting an apartment for them and she thought it was a good idea. (Ibid., p. 330) If LHO planned to kill JFK the next day as the WC claimed, why would he be worrying about renting an apartment? Ditto still worrying about securing his driver's license? Does this make any sense?
She was asked if LHO liked photography and this is important as a number of documents that LHO allegedly filled out lists his occupation as a "photographer." She said, "I don't think so. That is an expensive hobby." So, why was he supposedly listing his occupation as a photographer then? She couldn't remember if he owned a camera, but she had told the WC that he did. (Ibid., p. 332) She would be asked about the camera over and over and kept saying she couldn't recall. In fact, she used this answer a lot. One would think her memory of these things would be keen given the fact that her husband was accused of killing the president.
She is asked about the backyard photographs and she admits that these were supposedly the first two pictures that she ever took in her life, but somehow they came out perfectly. Meanwhile, when she has used a Polaroid camera (one of the easiest cameras to use in history) to photograph her children over the years "They didn't come out right." (Ibid., p. 334) How lucky for the WC, huh? It always seems like everything broke perfectly for the WC when it involves LHO.
Marina was unable to tell them where he had the alleged backyard photographs developed; if he had ever showed them to her or if he had discussed them with her. Basically, she was worthless in this area. She did claim that LHO wound the camera between the first and second one and this is different from what was said to the WC. The photographs were taken closely together and there wouldn't be time for LHO to come and wind the camera and then repose, and if he did, his head certainly wouldn't be in the SAME position as it is.
Unfortunately, the HSCA wasn't able to get anything major out of Marina during this questioning but they would leave with the feeling that she had not been honest with them on many issues. Her memory seemed very foggy for someone who wasn't in their 80's and given the fact that this is a major issue in American history. Too convenient for me.
