The JFK assassination is filled with mysterious sub plots. One of the most puzzling is the case of the curtain rod package.
During the weeks surrounding the assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald lived in a Dallas Texas suburb called Oak Cliff. His wife and family primarily stayed with Ruth Paine in another suburb called Irving. Oswald would travel to the Paine’s house on weekends to visit his family. He did not drive, but was able to get a ride with a young man named Buell Wesley Frazier. Wes and Oswald worked together in the Texas School Book Depository. The day before the assassination, which was a Thursday, Oswald asked Wes for a ride home. Wes said, “but today is Thursday, I usually drive you home on Friday”. Oswald said he needed to pick up some curtain rods for his boarding house room in Oak Cliff.
Friday morning, the day of the assassination, Oswald walked over to Wes’s sister house just down the block from the Paine’s. Wes was staying with his sister during this time. Later, after the assassination, Linnie May Randell (Wes’s sister) and Wes gave testimony describing the package to be about 22-26 inches long and about 5-6 inches wide. The manner in which Oswald carried it up to the house was consistent with a light package, less weight than a broken down rifle.
The Warren Commission wanted this package to contain Oswald’s rifle, but the size and weight were nowhere enough. The rifle in the broken down state was 35 inches long and a weight of 7.5 pounds. A package was found on the sixth floor, but it does not contain the 5-6 inch crease lines that would be consistent with the above descriptions
Ralph Leon Yates picked up a hitchhiker on Wednesday of that same week, two days before the assassination. The hitchhiker was picked up in Oak Cliff and he was carrying a 4 to 4.5 foot long package. He told Ralph it was curtain rods. This man also asked Ralph if he thought it was possible to assassinate the president from a building. The man asked to be dropped off at Houston and Elm in front of the Texas School Book Depository. Ralph later told one of his coworkers about the strange story. After the assassination, Ralph gave testimony that the man looked like Lee Harvey Oswald.
This sub plot is one the many that were never thoroughly investigated. Several questions arise.
The Ralph Yates occurrence was at 10:30 am. Oswald was likely at work during this time. Wasn’t this later established?
If the rifle was not in the package, what could Oswald be doing this for? The one window in his boarding house room had curtains.
No one other than Wes saw Oswald walk with the package towards the Texas School Book Depository. Did Oswald drop the package somewhere as he walked away from Wes’s car?
