The Warren Commission (WC) claimed that Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) purchased a rifle and a pistol by mail-order in the name of A. Hidell. They then claimed that the said weapons were mailed to a post-office box he had setup in his own name.
Let’s take a deeper look at this claim and see if it is correct or not.

After searching their records from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the officers of Klein’s discovered that a rifle bearing serial number C2766 had been shipped to one A. Hidell, Post Office Box 2915, Dallas, Tex., on March 20, 1963.
…The order coupon was signed, in handprinting, “A. Hidell, P.O. Box 2915, Dallas, Texas.” (WCR, pp. 118-119)

On it you will see A. Hidell and then PO Box 2915, Dallas, Texas, as the name and destination. How did the Dallas Police Department (DPD) and the FBI tie this to LHO? As we have seen in earlier posts in this series the DPD never knew of the supposed alias “A. Hidell” on 11/22/63 as the ONLY alias mentioned by them was “O.H. Lee” (see Johnston Ex. 1), so how did they know this was tied to the man they had arrested on 11/22/63?
We will look at the man who was called upon to fill in the blanks for us on this part of the case—Harry Holmes—Postal Inspector and man about town. He said this in his WC testimony.
Mr. BELIN. I hand you what has been marked "Holmes Deposition Exhibit 3," and ask you to state what that is?
Mr. HOLMES. That is a photostatic copy of the original box rental application covering the rental of box 2915, at the main post office in Dallas, Tex. which shows that it was completed on October the 9th, 1962. The applicants name was Lee H. Oswald, home address, 3519 Fairmore Avenue, Dallas, Tex. Signed Lee H. Oswald. It shows that the box was closed on May 14, 1963.
This confirms for us that he rented this P.O. Box in his OWN name, so the question has to be raised, why would he use an alleged alias to order the weapons with and then have it sent to a box with his OWN name attached to it? Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of using an alias in the first place? I would think so. As you will see, there is NO mention of the name “A. Hidell” with this Dallas P.O. Box.
Mr. BELIN. I am going to get to that. Then what did you do?
Mr. HOLMES. I gave that information to my boss by telephone. He called Washington immediately. Of course this information included the money order number. This number was transmitted by phone to the chief inspector in Washington, who immediately got the money order center at Washington to begin a search, which they use IBM equipment to kick out this money order, and about 7 o'clock Saturday night they did kick out the original money order and sent it over by, so they said, by special conveyance to the Secret Service, chief of Secret Service at Washington now, and it turned out, so they said, to be the correct money order. I asked them by phone as to what it said on it, and it said it had been issued to A. J. Hidell, which to me then was the tip that I had the correct money order. Up to then I didn't know whether I had the correct money order or not.
Mr. BELIN. How did you know about the use of the name A. J. Hidell?
Mr. HOLMES. When the box was opened in the name of Lee H. Oswald. Because for two reasons. I---one is, when he rented the post office box in New Orleans, he used the name of A. J. Hidell as one of the persons entitled to receive mail in that box.
Mr. BELIN. At that time did you know about that?
Mr. HOLMES. Yes.
Mr. BELIN. All right, what else?
Mr. HOLMES. In his billfold the police had found a draft registration card in the name of A. J. Hidell on his person at the time of his arrest, and I had seen it.
Mr. BELIN. Anything else now about this money order? Do you have a record of the number of the money order?
Mr. HOLMES. No; I don't.
So he is going by the P.O. Box LHO had setup in New Orleans, 30061, and the alleged Selective Service Card supposedly found on LHO when arrested. Of course this is probably fake as NO SS card had a picture on it in 1963 and LHO’s does.
It is interesting he did NOT want to give out the money order number (No. 2,202,130,462) too as it would be tracked by its serial number to show that it came from money orders that were NOT sold by the GPO until late 1964 or early 1965! How in the world would LHO get his hands on one of these?
Mr. BELIN. Pardon me a second. (Discussion off the record.) Anything else now, Mr Holmes?
Mr. HOLMES. I might cover the record of his rental of the post office box in New Orleans. Do you want me to go into that?
Mr. BELIN. All right, go ahead.
Mr. HOLMES. The box rental records at New Orleans show that on June the 3d, 1963, post office box 30061 was rented to L. H. Oswald. Let me see there. Some of my information comes at times I see 30061 and at times I see 30016. I had it two places. One is a written memorandum on that new setup, and the other is what I took over the phone, and both of them show 61.
Mr. BELIN. That is all right, you can go ahead.
Mr. HOLMES. This is at the Lafayette Square Station in New Orleans. At that time he showed his home address as 657 French Street, New Orleans. On this box rental application card, he showed as being entitled to also receive mail in the box, Marina Oswald, and A.J. Hidell. This box was closed on September 26, 1963, with instructions to forward mail addressed to 2515 West Fifth Street, Irving, Tex.
At the time this information was checked out in New Orleans by Postal Inspector Joe Zarza, two copies of the newspaper called "The Militant," were found in the box, which had not yet been forwarded. But there was a slipup. I hate to admit that.
So we see he listed both Marina and “A.J. Hidell” on his New Orleans post office application, but NOT for Dallas. WC defenders have argued for years that he did list A. Hidell on the part III of the application in Dallas, but we have two sources to confirm he did NOT.
The first one comes from Harry Holmes himself. He told the N.Y. Times a week after the assassination the following:
Quote on
No one other than Oswald was authorized to receive mail at that box. (N.Y. Times, 11/29/63)

Keep in mind Holmes would claim that the section in question, part III, was thrown out when the box was closed on May 14, 1963, but, as we can see this was NOT true as he saw who LHO listed besides himself and it was NO one.
The second source for showing this to be true comes via the FBI. In an effort to refute claims made in the book, “Who Killed Kennedy?” by Thomas Buchanan, the FBI created Exhibit 2585. Ironically, it was Buchanan who said LHO listed A. Hidell and the FBI who said he did NOT!

INVESTIGATION: Our investigation has revealed that Oswald did NOT indicate on his application that others, INCLUDING “A. I recommend reading this exhibit in full as it is full of good information. As you can see, they CLEARLY say NO “A. Hidell” was listed to receive mail at LHO’s P.O. Box, thus, any package that came for someone else would have been returned per Post Office regulations.
Postal regulation Section 355.111b (4) prescribed that "mail addressed to a person at a post office box, who is not authorized to receive mail, shall be endorsed 'addressee unknown', and returned to the sender when possible."
There is no way any package addressed to “A. Hidell” would have been delivered to LHO. That violates every rule in the Post Office system. Remember, the U.S. Post Office is part of the government and they FOLLOW RULES to the letter.
Let’s go back to the Harry Holmes testimony.
Mr. BELIN. Was anything in that room--was he asked about knowing Alek Hidell? Or anything about Alek Hidell?
Mr. HOLMES. I brought it up first as to did he ever have a package sent to him from anywhere. I said, "Did you receive mail through this box 2915 under the name of any other name than Lee Oswald," and he said, "Absolutely not."
"What about a package to an A. J. Hidell?"
He said, "No."
"Well, did you order a gun in that name to come there?"
"No, absolutely not."
"Had one come under that name, could this fellow have gotten it?"
He said, "Nobody got mail out of that box but me; no, sir." "Maybe my wife, but I couldn't say for sure whether my wife ever got mail, but it is possible she could have."
"Well, who is A. J. Hidell?" I asked him.
And he said, "I don't know any such person."
I showed him the box rental application for the post office box in New Orleans and I read from it. I said, "Here this shows as being able to receive, being entitled to receive mail is Marina Oswald." And he said, "Well, that is my wife, so what?"
And I said also it says "A. J. Hidell."
"Well, I don't know anything about that."
That is all he would say about it.
Then Captain Fritz interrupted and said, "Well, what about this card we got out of your billfold? This draft registration card, he called it, where it showed A. J. Hidell."
"Well, that is the only time that I recall he kind of flared up and he said, "Now, I have told you all I am going to tell you about that card in my billfold." He said, "You have the card yourself, and you know as much about it as I do." And he showed a little anger. Really the only time that he flared up.
I know WC defenders claim LHO is a liar, with NO support or proof of course, but UNTIL someone can show his above answers are wrong (or dare I say lies) we have to go with them. They are very illuminating to say the least. It would show us either the P.O. Box in New Orleans was setup for him or that someone AMMENDED IT to include “A.J. Hidell” for receiving mail as he had NO idea why that name was on the application. He said he “knew no such person” and we have to believe him at this point since we don’t see him using the name anywhere beyond the alleged rifle order and New Orleans P.O. Box application.
We saw in the Bookhout testimony how touchy LHO was about the Selective Service card as every time it would be mentioned he would get mad. Could it be the keystone to LHO realizing he was setup as the patsy? It was the ONLY physical evidence that tied LHO to that name (save for the New Orleans Postal application that Holmes seemed to know all about quite quickly), and thus, tied him to the alleged murder weapons. As I said earlier, this card had to be fake as research has shown they did NOT carry photos on them in 1963, but LHO’s did. It was like they were making extra sure it was tied to him.
Once again we see the claims of the WC are just NOT supported by their own evidence. Thus, they are sunk.
What is important though is to NOTE how they made claims that were COUNTER to their OWN evidence!
