The Warren Commission (WC) claimed that Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) assassinated President John F. Kennedy (JFK) all by himself. They further claimed that Jack Ruby shot and killed LHO. They also said that these two lone killers did not know each other.
We have seen previously in other posts, a number of people had seen someone who they thought was LHO with Ruby at the Carousel Club (Carroll Jarnigan, William D. Crowe, W.W. Litchfield II, Karen Carlin, and Billy Joe Willis) and this post will look at another.
*****************************************
We know that Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade knew about this witness as he discussed the sighting during his WC testimony when he was mentioning the statements they had received regarding LHO and Ruby being seen together.
Mr. WADE. …We had a waitress that I think you are all familiar with that was out at B&B Cafe at 3 a.m. on the 22d who said she served Ruby and Oswald there.
B&B Care on Oak Lane, I know you have got that, I have seen it somewhere.
This couldn’t have been LHO since he was at the Paine residence sound asleep at the time. Keep in mind that the B&B Café was next door to the Vegas Club. We will see later on that D.A. Wade had no interest in interviewing her about this.
Senator COOPER. Did anyone else tell you that they had seen Ruby and Oswald talking together?
Mr. WADE. No one else personally has told me this.
Senator COOPER. You mentioned a girl.
Mr. WADE. No, I never talked to her but we had the Dallas Police take an affidavit from her and so did the FBI of that which is in all your files. What her name is, I just know it is a waitress out at the B&B Care. She lived in Mesquite, Tex., and some of my people interviewed her and she told them the same thing she told the FBI…
Why did Wade find it unnecessary to interview this woman himself. Wasn’t this issue of paramount importance to the case?
Well, it was only important IF one was seeking the truth of what had happened in Dallas. If you were looking to simply endorse the “LHO did it all by himself” theory then of course this was something that you wanted to avoid at all cost since it couldn’t have been LHO that the waitress saw since he was accounted for. So who could it have been then?
Wade tells the WC that there was a number of witnesses that had seen LHO and Ruby together.
Mr. RANKIN. Do you have any evidence as to whether Jack Ruby was involved with anyone else in the killing of Oswald?
Mr. WADE. No, sir; I have no evidence on that. We have some and I think you have them all, some 8 or 10 witnesses who have said they had seen Ruby and Oswald together at various times.
The WC shows no interest in telling us who the waitress was in their Report. Wade even said that the FBI interview with her was “in their files” and that the WC was familiar with her so the excuse of them not knowing can’t be used. Furthermore, how hard would this be to find out for them?
They had a perfect opportunity to enlighten us about this sighting, but they amended the context to hide this problem for them.

…He then went to the Vegas Club which he helped Larry Crafard close for the night; and, as late as 2:30 a.m., Ruby was seen eating at a restaurant near the Vegas Club. (WC Report (WCR), p. 334)

We can see that the waitress and LHO have been edited out of the story. Clearly the answer is obvious as to why. It didn’t point to LHO, thus, it pointed to a conspiracy as this person could not have been LHO. This sighting, and the other numerous sightings, illustrate that at least one person who bore a strong resemblance to LHO was hanging out with Ruby in the months leading up to the assassination.
Needless to say, the waitress was not called by the WC to find out more about what she saw. So who could have been the person who had early morning breakfast with Ruby on November 22, 1963?
Well, if we look within the twenty-six volumes we will find the answer. This is written in Commission Exhibit (CE) 5226.

At about 7:30 PM, RUBY picked him up and took him to the Vegas Club, and he did not see RUBY again until approximately 2:30 AM, after closing, at which they again had breakfast at the Lucas B and B, returning to the Carousel at 3:30 or 4:00 AM. (CE 5226, p. 356; p. 4 in original report)

Who was the “he” mentioned in the FBI report? It was Curtis La Verne Crafard who was working and living at the Carousel Club since mid-October 1963. This is who the FBI report is about. This means that it was Crafard and Ruby who had breakfast together early in the morning of November 22, 1963, that the waitress saw.
There are several other witnesses who could attest to Crafard’s resemblance to LHO. First was Robert K. Patterson who was an electronics salesman at an establishment that Ruby and Crafard visited on November 1, 1963. Here is what the WC wrote about it in their report.

The testimony of a few witnesses who claim to have seen Ruby with a person who they feel may have been Oswald warrants further comment. One such witness, Robert K. Patterson, a Dallas electronics salesman, has stated on a date established from sales records as November 1, 1963, Ruby, accompanied by a man who resembled Oswald purchased some equipment from his business establishment. However, Patterson did not claim positively that the man he saw was Oswald, and two of his associates who were present at the time could not state that the man was Oswald. Other evidence indicates that Ruby’s companion was Larry Crafard.
Crafard, who lived at the Carousel Club while working for Ruby from mid-October until November 23, 1963, stated that sometime in late October or early November he accompanied Ruby to an electronics store in connection with the purchase of electronics equipment. Ruth Paine testified that Crafard’s photograph bears a strong resemblance to Oswald; and employment records of the Texas School Book Depository show that Oswald worked a full day on November 1, 1963. (WCR, p. 360)

This shows that Crafard could be confused with Oswald. Patterson, and his associates, got an up close look at him as well as a decent length of time to do it, and they still thought he looked like LHO. Now, imagine if your view of him was further away and for a short period of time?
This passage mentions Ruth Paine. She was shown a series of photographs of Crafard during her testimony. Here they are.

Here is what she said after viewing these photographs.
Mr. JENNER - There have been marked as Commission's exhibits in this series 451 and 453 to 456, a series of five colored photographs purporting to be photographs of one Curtis LaVerne Crafard, taken on the 28th day of November 1963.
Mrs. Paine would you be good enough to look at each of those, and after you have looked at them, I wish to ask you a question.
Mrs. PAINE - I have looked at them all.
Mr. JENNER - Calling on your recollection of the physiognomy and appearance of Lee Oswald, do you detect a resemblance between the man depicted in those photographs, the exhibit numbers of which I have given, and Lee Oswald?
Mrs. PAINE – Yes; I do.
Mr. JENNER - To the best of your present recollection, do you recall whether you have ever seen the person whose features are reflected on those photographs?
Mrs. PAINE - No; I have not seen him.
The CHAIRMAN - May I see those, please?
Mrs. PAINE - Should I say that one picture in particular struck me as looking similar to Lee?
Mr. JENNER - Yes. When the Chief Justice has concluded his examination I will have you pick out that one in particular. Thank you, sir. When you select it will you give the exhibit number which appears on the reverse side?
Mrs. PAINE - Exhibit No. 453. Clearly the shoulders are broader than with Lee, but it is a quality about the face that recalls Oswald to my mind.
Mr. JENNER - And the jacket?
Mrs. PAINE – And the attire.
Mr. JENNER - The attire that is shown on the exhibit which is the first one you have before you, what is the number of that?
Mrs. PAINE - Exhibit 451.
Mr. JENNER - I asked you to describe Lee Oswald, his general attire. Did he normally wear a zipper jacket of the character shown on that exhibit?
Mrs. PAINE - Yes.
Mr. JENNER - And referring to the other photographs, you say that man's attire is similar to that Lee Oswald normally effected and employed.
Mrs. PAINE – Yes. It certainly is.
Ruth Paine’s comments are interesting as she had quite a few occasions to view LHO so her opinion is very important in this regard. What would have been of even greater importance would have been the WC’s own opinion since Crafard was called as a witness before them. Why did they issue no pronouncement on this issue?
The obvious answer is because the WC didn’t like where this led, therefore, they did what they always did in those circumstances – they ignored the implications of Crafard being in cahoots with Ruby, and instead used it to proclaim, “See, all those LHO-Ruby sightings were really just Ruby-Crafard sightings.” Why did Ruby recruit a man who resembled LHO so much at about the same time LHO started working at the Texas School Book Depository (TSBD) and keep him employed up until the time of the assassination? This is a question that the WC avoided at all costs.
This post includes evidence that shows that the WC, FBI and the Dallas D.A. were not interested in discovering why Ruby employed a man who strongly resembled LHO. They further had no interest in talking with the waitress who saw Crafard and Ruby eating breakfast together in the early hours of November 22, 1963. One could ask, why is this important? It is important because the WC, FBI and the Dallas D.A. avoided the waitress who thought she was seeing Ruby on LHO together. Furthermore, in their synopsis of Ruby’s activities over the weekend they excluded mention of Crafard and instead made it sound like Ruby ate alone.
The WC’s failure to comment on Crafard’s resemblance to LHO is also suspicious as they took testimony from him and the FBI had interviewed him as well. The WC’s attempt at trying to show Crafard’s sudden departure from Dallas on November 23, 1963, was no big deal is suspicious too. WC defenders claim LHO’s departure from the TSBD indicates guilt, so what does fleeing Dallas for the hinterlands of Michigan the day after the assassination indicate?
