In the mid-1960s New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison began a formal investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK). He had done some preliminary work shortly after the assassination, but like most of us he decided to move on with his life at that time.
Three years later things came full circle as Garrison regained an interest in the case. His main reason for this was that the accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO), had spent key months in New Orleans (late April to late September) during the summer of 1963. While there he had an eventful summer that would have piqued the interest of any real investigator (save the Warren Commission (WC)) as there were a number of odd things going on.
Thankfully for us Garrison's interest was piqued as to this day he conducted the ONLY real investigation into the murder of our 35th President, despite being fought in many ways by the government and the media, and he discovered a lot of valuable things that may have never been uncovered otherwise.
The two prime players in this New Orleans saga were LHO and Clay Shaw. Garrison wondered what has been wondered for decades -- was there any kind of relationship between these two men? Garrison sought to show that there was.
The first lead that there may have been some sort of relationship involved New Orleans attorney Dean Andrews. He would testify before the WC that he was contacted by Clay Bertrand who asked him to go to Dallas after the assassination and help the boy being accused. This had to be LHO, so this grabbed Garrison's attention. Garrison believed that Bertrand was an alias that Clay Shaw used, thus, it was Clay Shaw calling Andrews requesting that he head to Dallas to represent LHO. Surely if this was correct the two men had to have some sort of relationship as people do not call a lawyer for people they don't know.
Andrews would tell Garrison that he never met Clay Bertrand ("On The Trail Of The Assassins", p. 79 [hardcover edition]), but he would tell the WC something different.
Mr. LIEBELER - Do you have a picture in your mind of this Clay Bertrand?
Mr. ANDREWS - Oh, I ran up on that rat about 6 weeks ago and he spooked, ran in the street. I would have beat him with a chain if I had caught him.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now subsequent to that time, however, you actually ran into Clay Bertrand in the street?
Mr. ANDREWS - About 6 weeks ago. I am trying to think of the name of this bar. That's where this rascal bums out. I was trying to get past him so I could get a nickel in the phone and call the Feebees or John Rice, but he saw me and spooked and ran. I haven't seen him since.
Mr. LIEBELER - Did you talk to him that day?
Mr. ANDREWS - No; if I would have got close enough to talk to him. I would have grabbed him.
Mr. LIEBELER - What does this guy look like?
Mr. ANDREWS - He is about 5 feet 8 inches. Got sandy hair, blue eyes, ruddy complexion. Must weigh about 165, 170, 175. He really took off that rascal.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now before you ran into Clay Bertrand in the street on this day, did you have a notion in your mind what he looked like?
Mr. ANDREWS - I had seen him before onetime to recognize him.
Mr. LIEBELER - When you saw him that day, he appeared to you as he had before when you recognized him?
Mr. ANDREWS - He hasn't changed any appearance, I don't think. Maybe a little fatter, maybe a little skinnier.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now I have a rather lengthy report of an interview that Mr. Kennedy had with you on December 5, 1963, in which he reports you as stating that you had a mental picture of Clay Bertrand as being approximately 6 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 2 inches in height, brown hair, and well dressed.
Mr. ANDREWS - Yes.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now this description is different, at least in terms of the height of the man, than the one you have just given us of Clay Bertrand.
Mr. ANDREWS - But, you know, I don't play Boy Scouts and measure them. I have only seen this fellow twice in my life. I don't think there is that much in the description. There may be some to some artist, but to me, there isn't that much difference. Might be for you all.
It is clear that Dean Andrews is not a reliable or truthful witness. He would tell the FBI that Clay Bertrand was a "figment of his imagination"; then he said that he was 6'1" or 6'2" with brown hair, and then he told the WC that he was 5'8", sandy hair, blue eyes, ruddy complexion and weighed between 165-175 pounds. He was all over the place. To me this shows that he was being dishonest as he did NOT want to describe Clay Shaw. We know Shaw was gay and Andrews said that "Bertrand" had sent him gay kids.
Mr. LIEBELER - Now what can you tell us about this Clay Bertrand? You met him prior to that time?
Mr. ANDREWS - I had seen Clay Bertrand once some time ago, probably a couple of years. He's the one who calls on behalf of gay kids normally, either to obtain bond or parole for them. I would assume that he was the one that originally sent Oswald and the gay kids...
This is interesting because he even says that Bertrand sent "Oswald and the gay kids" to his office. This would show again some sort of relationship. But wait, there is more. It seems Bertrand also sent Oswald to see Andrews regarding his wife.
Mr. LIEBELER - That was after Oswald had been in your office?
Mr. ANDREWS - Yes; then the second time he came back, we talked about the yellow paper discharge, about his status as a citizen, and about his wife's status.
Mr. LIEBELER - Did he indicate that he wanted to institute citizenship proceedings for his wife?
Mr. ANDREWS - Yes; I told him to go to Immigration and get the forms. Cost him $10. All he had to do was execute them. He didn't need a lawyer. That was the end of that.
IF Bertrand wasn't Shaw, then the identity of this person helping Oswald this much should have been a priority for the WC to find out, but as usual they did NOTHING. Why? What were they afraid of finding out?
Another clue was the sighting of LHO with an older man who matched the description of Shaw in Clinton, Louisiana, in the late summer or early autumn of 1963. Many witnesses saw a man resembling LHO with an older distinguished gray-haired man that matched Shaw's description. I will not go into detail on this one as there is another upcoming post on the Clinton sighting that covers this in great detail.
One of the key witnesses for this sighting was Edwin McGehee and here is more details on what he said from an earlier post in this series.
jfkconspiracyforum.freeforums.net/thread/962/garrison-chronicles-edwin-mcgehee
Needles to say, the WC ignored McGehee because of what he saw and described as it ran counter to their made up story regarding LHO. If LHO and Shaw did NOT know each other in any way, why would they be at a C.O.R.E. registration together? Why would they be at a C.O.R.E. registration drive anyway? Was this the real reason or was there some other reason for this sighting? Yes, it would support his supposed communist leanings by being a man of the underprivileged, but was that the only reason this trip was planned?
Another sighting involved a man by the name of Vernon Bundy and his story has been covered already in this series.
jfkconspiracyforum.freeforums.net/thread/1021/garrison-chronicles-vernon-bundy
We can think whatever we want of Vernon Bundy, but none of that changes what he saw. He said he saw LHO and Clay Shaw meeting and that there was an exchange of money. Why would they be meeting and have money exchanged IF they didn't know each other and were not working together in some fashion? It had to be Shaw too since Bundy knew that Shaw had a slight limp when even Garrison was NOT aware of this until it was shown in court.
We also have this exchange Garrison had with Richard Case Nagell regarding Shaw and LHO.
Quote on
Had he actually been in physical association with Oswald? Right there with him? Yes, he replied. And with other men connected with Oswald? The answer was yes. Where did this occur? In New Orleans and in Texas.
I asked him whether these other men and Oswald all were working together on the project or whether the others were manipulating Oswald. He thought this question through at some length. Then he said that he did not pretend to have been close enough to know for sure, but his intuition was that others had manipulated Oswald from the outset.
I asked him the names of the other men. He hesitated, but when the answer came, it was specific: Guy Banister, Clay Shaw and David Ferrie. ("On The Trail Of The Assassins", pp. 185-186, hardcover edition.)
Quote off
This statement should not be a surprise to anyone who has researched this case as both Shaw and Ferrie are key to the plot. Nagell also admitted later on that he also used the alias "A. Hidell" and made trips to Mexico City. He had warned the FBI of the impending assassination in September 1963 and they did not nothing with his warning. Instead, they denied that they ever received it.
Another key to this connection is David Ferrie and he will be looked at in more detail in this series later on. Ferrie and Shaw were connected no matter what the WC claimed, and this connection led to them manipulating LHO. What was their role? Was it just sheep-dipping as Garrison said? Or was there more to it?
What do you think about this?
