[Note: Why have Ruth and Michael Paine received so much protection from the Unites States Government over the decades? What could they have done to deserve this type of protection?]
The Enigma of Ruth and Michael Paine

After the Second World War, unsettled economic conditions, coupled with actual warfare against Communist forces in Korea, led to much agitation over the issue of American loyalty. Inevitably, the anti-Communist issue found its way into politics. Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, a Republican from Wisconsin, charged that there were large numbers of Communist sympathizers and bad security risks in and outside of government and their purpose was to overthrow the Government of the United States by force and violence if necessary.
Hysteria took over in the country. Critics of labor unions maintained that Communists had won actual control of many unions and were deliberately fomenting labor unrest. Similar charges against college and university faculties led to some dismissals, and to an increasing tendency to require special loyalty oaths of teachers. Many of these charges lacked supporting evidence, but those who were interested in discrediting the [President Harry] Truman administration demanded little by way of proof.
Many of these people were professional pacifists, who were "isolationists" in the 1930's and joined with extreme advocates of neutrality to denounce preparedness as merely a prelude to war. Among
these pacifists were Socialists, Communists, and members of the liberal Protestant clergy. These were the people that were remembered and investigated during the post war McCarthy hysteria. And because many of these Americans were known to have flirted with Socialism or Communism, they were threatened and even turned into government "assets" assigned to join questionable groups and forced to make routine reports on members and their activities. College professors were made to report on other faculty members and students that appeared to be tinted red.
Ironically, many of these "turned" assets became well-off in their newfound forced patriotism.
Both Ruth and Mike Paine came from this background and have done well since the assassination of President Kennedy.
Mike's father was on the "security index subject list" for political activities, and even as late as 1963, Mike's patriotism could be questioned. Despite the fact that Mike claimed to be a devout
pacifist, he worked for Bell Helicopter, one of the largest suppliers of military aircraft in the Vietnam War.
FBI documents reveal that, while Ruth Paine was a student at Antioch College, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, her mother was telling neighbors that she (Mrs. Wm. A Hyde) was a "Communist." (From SA Hosty Report 12-11-63, Field Office File No. DL 1051716).
From the same file:
An Assistant US Attorney sent a letter to the FBI dated June 4, 1953, requesting an investigation of Carl Dudley Hyde to determine the validity of his claim of "Conscientious Objector" in connection with his classification under the Selective Service System. He left for England in 1953 to study the possibility of living in a religious community, the Society of Brothers.
The Feb 12, 1947, issue of the Dayton Daily News contained an article which indicated that Carl Dudley Hyde was one of fifteen residents of Yellow Springs, Ohio, who sent their draft registration
cards to Representative Joseph Martin, Speaker of the House, accompanied with a letter which stated in part, "We see any military program involving peacetime conscription as a drastic violation of
civil rights and a threat to the peace-making efforts of the United Nations."
In 1963, the FBI considered the Paines [to be] a "high priority." The Warren Commission considered conducting their own probe of Ruth and Mike. It never happened. For reasons known to only a few, the Paines became untouchable and have remained protected until this day. Dallas Assistant DA Alexander wanted to "look into the Paines" but no one would go along with him.
The House Select Committee on Assassinations made excuses as to why they could not subpoena the Paines and the [Assassination] Records Review Board excused them saying it was not their responsibility.
It appears that after being "rolled over" the assets were assigned to the Dallas area where Ruth became the babysitter for the Oswalds, hoping to gain information that the FBI was not able to get from the uncooperative Marxist, Lee Oswald.
While Ruth was reading the Oswald's mail, Mike was attending any meeting that sounded interesting to the FBI office. One day, he was at a Bircher's meeting. The next night, he was making notes on the ACLU. And, on Sundays, he was eating breakfast at a restaurant across the street from SMU and accosting the students in heated discussions about America's treatment of Cuba.
Great research on the Paines has been done by Carol Hewitt, Steve Jones and Nancy Wertz. I suggest that interested parties search out the results of their research. Their work alone should be enough to bring the lives of the Paines out of their protected cover, into the light of day, and have them, under oath, tell the world what they know about the Kennedy coup d' Etat.
Is Ruth Paine still alive? Ruth is active in Quaker and liberal charities and organizations and lives in Santa Rosa, California.
Ruth Paine returned to Pennsylvania and became principal of a Quaker school. She soon moved to St. Petersburg, Florida and got a master’s degree in psychology at the University of South Florida. After working for the school system in Franklin County in the Florida Panhandle she returned to St. Petersburg and worked for the Hillsborough County, Florida, school system until her retirement. She is active in Quaker, liberal charities, organizations and lives in Santa Rosa, California.
Michael Paine's testimony would later become a central feature of the Warren Commission's investigation of the assassination, particularly in regard to the presence of the purported assassination rifle in the garage of his family home.
Paine and his wife were portrayed in Oliver Stone's JFK as characters called "Bill and Janet Williams," presumably to avoid legal action.
He is a member of the American Civil Liberties Union.
