The Warren Commission (WC) claimed Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) fired three shots and killed President John. F. Kennedy (JFK) while providing NO evidence showing that he did. There are many areas of evidence in this case, and we have looked at most of them in this series so far.
This post will look at one we have not explored yet — the acoustical evidence.

I found something new in this area for myself as I had no idea the WC had the FBI study a tape for gunshots, and it was NOT the Dallas Police Department (DPD) Dictabelt (dispatch transmissions) that gets all the attention either. In the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) “investigation” they mentioned that the WC obtained a copy of a tape recording that it had the FBI analyze.

The Warren Commission also employed scientific analysis in its investigation (LOL, I know!) and had recognized that acoustics might be used to resolve some questions about the shots fired at the President. It had obtained a tape recording, an alleged on-the-scene account of the assassination made by Sam Pate, a Dallas radio newsman, but an FBI examination of the tape “failed to indicate the presence of any sounds which could be interpreted as gunshots." (HSCA Report, p. 65)

I had never heard of this before as I assumed the only recording was the DPD Dictabelt. It was stated that most of the tape recording by Pate was NOT done in Dealey Plaza (DP), but it still had the time of the assassination on it supposedly. Given what we know about the acoustical evidence doesn’t this seem odd that the FBI “failed to find” any noise similar to a gunshot? We know gunshots were fired, even the WC admits that, so why did they find NO sounds that could be interpreted as gunshots on the recording?
The FBI had turned over this tape to Dr. Lawrence Kersta of the Bell Telephone Acoustic and Speech Laboratories for study by the way. On the next page the HSCA tells us why the FBI, via Kersta, found no noises that could be interpreted as gunshots.

…And even if the tape had been made during the firing of the shots and had recorded them, Kersta’s spectographic analysis would NOT HAVE FOUND THEM. The committee’s consultant advised that spectographic analysis is appropriate for only detecting tonal, or harmonic, sound. To identify a gunshot, the analysis must be able to portray a waveform on an oscilloscope or similar such device. (HSCA Report, p. 66) (Emphasis added)

That is a good way NOT to find something you don’t want to find, huh? Just use the WRONG method or equipment and then you won’t find anything you don’t want to find! Kersta’s work did admit to “six non-voiced noises” though and we are left to wonder what these could have been. The spacing seems conducive to gunshots to me.
The most famous acoustical evidence is the DPD Dictabelt which was recorded when one of the motorcycle police officers in the motorcade left his mike open. The recordings were given to a firm named Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN) in Cambridge, MA to have analyzed. BBN converted the sounds on the recording into waveforms and by using sophisticated electronic filters they were able to eliminate repetitive noises such as pistons firing in the engines of the motorcycles. They then looked for a “sequence of impulses” to determine if gunshots could be seen. Here is what the report says at this point.

Six sequences of impulses that could have been caused by a noise such as gunfire were initially identified as having been transmitted over channel 1. Thus, they warranted further analysis.
…All six impulses passed the preliminary screening tests. [See the link for the screening process.]
…These matches did not, however, prove conclusively that the impulses on the 1963 dispatch tape did, in fact, represent gunfire from the book depository or grassy knoll. (HSCA Report, p. 67)

This is worse news for the WC defenders as they support a shot from the Texas School Book Depository (TSBD), and yet, they could NOT show a shot came from there! Meanwhile, James Barger, acoustical expert for the HSCA, said the chances of a shot from the Grassy Knoll (GK) was “only 50 percent!” ONLY 50 percent? We were told it was ZERO percent BY THE WC! This means they lied to us, and thus, their conclusion is SUNK.
The HSCA said right out of the gate that LHO was guilty of the crime (what evidence they could have used to reach this conclusion is beyond me), but also said the following:

B. Scientific acoustical evidence establishes a HIGH PROBABILITY that TWO GUNMEN fired at President John F. Kennedy. Other scientific evidence does NOT preclude the possibility of two gunmen firing at the President. Scientific evidence negates some specific conspiracy allegations.
C. The committee believes, on the basis of the evidence available to it, that President John F. Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a CONSPIRACY. The committee was unable to identify the other gunman or the extent of the conspiracy. (HSCA Report, p. 3) (Emphasis added)

They admit the death of JFK was probably due to a conspiracy. I don’t even know why the word “probably” is used since they admit there is strong evidence for a second gunman and that alone shows it was a conspiracy UNLESS you think “two lone nuts” went to DP at the same time to shoot at JFK. What are the odds of that happening? Of course, they did NOT identify the other gunman or determine the extent of the conspiracy as they too had BLAMED LHO for all of it and did NOT allow the investigators to find anything of value, if possible, in those areas. It then goes on to exonerate all the main suspects in this case save one — the NEW PATSY — the Mafia. Like LHO, the Mafia has been heralded as the most convenient scapegoat IF you don’t buy the one “lone nut” did all explanation. I am NOT saying elements of the Mafia could NOT have been involved, in fact, they were, but to blame it all on them is as ridiculous as the “LHO did all” claims.
The irony here is the HSCA lambasted the WC for doing what it wound up doing!

Neither “investigation” looked into the idea of a conspiracy and who could have been involved in an in-depth way, and both presented their “LHO did all alone” conclusions in a definitive manner as if it was true and as if they actually had evidence to support the conclusion!
