IMO... Oswald ordered a 36" Carcano, serial number 2766 with bottom mounts for the sling. This is the rifle he allegedly "posed" with for the famous "backyard photograph".
The rifle now in evidence (C 2766) is a 40.2" rifle with side mounts for the sling. This is the rifle that was removed from the TSBD by Dallas Police.
1. The Klein's employee who originated the idea of mounting a scope on the rifle was Mitchell Westra. He told the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) that Klein's only mounted the scope on the 36 inch MC. (HSCA interview of Westra 2/20/78)
The man who actually mounted the scopes for Klein's was Bill Sharp, their in-house gunsmith. He confirmed what Westra testified to: the package deal with the scope and MC rifle was used by Klein's to market the 36 inch MC. (HSCA interview of Sharp, 2/21/78)
Again, if this is so, where did the Warren Commission's rifle -- a 40 inch MC with scope -- come from?
2. Dr. Homer Wood testified that his son Sterling told the FBI that the scope he saw on the Oswald rifle at the shooting range was NOT the same scope as the rifle in Greener exhibits 3 & 4 (The Depository Carcano, C 2766).
Sterling went as far as to say that C 2766 was NOT the same rifle he saw in the hands of Oswald.
Mr. LIEBELER. And you still say now that the scope on this rifle
doesn't look like the scope the guy at the rifle range had?
Mr. WOOD. Yes.
Mr. LIEBELER. But this is the same scope as in the picture that the FBI showed you?
Mr. WOOD. Yes, sir.
Mr. LIEBELER. Did you tell the FBI that the weapon in the picture that they showed you was not the one you observed out at the rifle range?
Mr. WOOD. I said that was not the one. (10 H 395-396)
3. In addition, Sterling Wood told the FBI that the rifle he saw in the hands of Oswald at the shooting range had BOTTOM SLING MOUNTS.
Mr. LIEBELER. Did the FBI ask you about the sling mount on the rifle?
Mr. WOOD. I think they did.
Mr. LIEBELER. What did you tell them about that?
Mr. WOOD. I think I told them it was mounted on the underneath. (10 H 396)
