The Warren Commission (WC) would state that Jack Ruby acted alone in his killing of Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO). There was NO doubt about that. Was there?

On page 373 of the Report (WCR) they wrote the following:

Rumors of a connection between Ruby and Oswald have proved groundless, while examination of Ruby’s background and associations, his behavior prior to the assassination, and his activities during the November 22-24 weekend has yielded no evidence that Ruby CONSPIRED WITH ANYONE in planning or executing the killing of Lee Harvey Oswald. Whatever the legal culpability of Jack Ruby for his act on November 24 , the evidence is PERSUASIVE that he acted INDEPENDENTLY in shooting Oswald. (Emphasis added) (WCR, p. 373)

This statement/conclusion is cut and dried—Ruby had NO assistance in killing LHO. Period. Then how do we explain Commission Exhibit (CE) 2980 then? CE 2980 was a CIA memorandum dated September 15, 1964, that was sent to the WC in regards to their request made on May 19, 1964, about Jack Ruby and his possible connections. Why it took the CIA so long to respond is in and of itself quite interesting as you can see this memorandum came back to the WC just as they were getting ready to make their report available. The memorandum came from Thomas H. Karamessines, Deputy Director for Plans, of the CIA. Why this request was made to the CIA and NOT the FBI (who has jurisdiction in the United States) is quite interesting and would lead one to believe Ruby was thought to be involved in INTERNATIONAL affairs.
After the usual background of his childhood and early years we discover something interesting on page 468 (page 4 of the memorandum).

Sometime in late 1947, after having been interrogated by Narcotics Agents, Ruby returned to Dallas and established permanent residence. He continued to operate the Singapore Supper Club with Eva until sometime in 1948 when she moved to California and alone for an undisclosed period of time. What is interesting about this is that it has long been said that Jack Ruby (a.k.a. Rubenstein) was also in California. It was said in 1947 that he worked for Congressman Richard Nixon. In 1975 a memorandum was released with a host of FBI declassified documents that said the following.
Quote on
Nixon intervened on behalf of a Chicago gangster who was about to be called as a witness before a congressional committee... It is my sworn statement that one Jack Rubinstein of Chicago, noted as a potential witness for hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, is performing information functions for the staff of Congressman Richard Nixon, Republican of California. It is requested Rubinstein not be called for open testimony in the aforementioned hearings. That same year Rubinstein moved to Dallas, Texas, and changed his name to JACK RUBY... (Colonel Bo Gritz, Called To Serve, p. 534) (Emphasis added)

One of the main arguments against this memorandum by WC defenders is that it shows a ZIP CODE on it and NO zip codes were around in 1947/1948 when it was written. That is true, but what is also true is someone obviously added this document to a letterhead at a later time to make it look more official. For IF it is NOT authentic as claimed by WC defenders (and self-proclaimed conspiracy believers like Tony Marsh), then why was it PART of CLASSIFIED documents? Who made that goof for all those years?
Also, we see in CE 2980 that Jack Rubenstein did change his name as Colonel Gritz said. On page 467 (page 1 of memorandum) we see this.

So we see Jack did change his last name in the time period Colonel Gritz said he did—when he moved back to Dallas in 1947 in all likelihood. Was Eva following up on things Jack had started with Congressman Richard Nixon? Who knows for sure, but don’t you think this should have been looked into by the WC? In a strange twist of fate (or not so strange based on your views) Richard Nixon would be in Dallas on the morning of the assassination and he would promptly forget this and tell THREE versions of how he heard about President John F. Kennedy’s (JFK) assassination over the ensuing years. Until the day he died this topic always agitated Nixon. Why? IF he had nothing to hide why did he have so much trouble remembering he was in Dallas and how he heard about JFK’s death?
Back to CE 2980. On page 470 (page 8 of memorandum) it says the following about Ruby.

It is possible that Ruby could have been utilized by a politically motivated group either upon the premise of money or because of the influential character of the individual approaching Ruby. (Ibid., p. 470; p. 8 in original)

How does this correlate to what the WC concluded about Ruby acting alone? In terms of making money the CIA wrote this about Ruby on page 7 of the memorandum.
Quote on
On balance, it may be said that Ruby’s PRIMARY INTEREST in life was MAKING MONEY. (Emphasis added)

Given Ruby’s massive debt to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and his penchant for making money, can we just assume he would NOT have shot LHO for money? The memorandum then goes on to list some groups he may have worked with.
First up was the Teamsters Union. It states that Ruby’s old union in Chicago was NOW part of the Teamsters. It mentions that Ruby had contact with Barney Baker who was close to Jimmy Hoffa! We know Hoffa hated the Kennedys and Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) assumed Hoffa had something to do with the assassination. The hotel Ruby would go to on the night of November 21, 1963, was the Cabana Hotel and the CIA memorandum said it was alleged to have been built with Teamster’s money! Another man who was staying there was Jim Braden and his ties to organized crime are also quite lengthy.
Other interesting notes include the Las Vegas gambling community (Lewis McWillie); THE DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT (DPD) and the Dallas News Media (particularly KLIF). They listed the DPD as a possible group who may have an “interest in the assassination of JFK.” That says it all doesn’t it? Given their horrendous performance that day and the over the weekend who can say this is NOT a possibility? The report also mentions on page 471 (page 9 of memorandum) that Ruby frequented the Aldophus Hotel and it has been said the coordination for the assassination (i.e. the shooters) came from that location. This hotel was also just across the street from Ruby’s Carousel Club. Is this just another coincidence?
On page 473 (page 13 of memorandum) it mentions H.L Hunt and Lamar Hunt. Under this listing it says the following:
Quote on
historymatters.com/archive/jfk/wc/wcvols/wh26/pages/WH_Vol26_0255a.gif
k. H.L. Hunt and Lamar Hunt. May be same person. Name Lamar Hunt found in notebook of Ruby. Ruby visited his office his office on November 21. Hunt denies knowing Ruby. Ruby gives innocent explanation. Ruby found with literature of H. L. Hunt after shooting Oswald. (Ibid., p. 473; p. 13 in original) [/font]

This is rife with good stuff. Why was Lamar Hunt’s name in Ruby’s notebook IF he did NOT know Ruby at all? The visit to the Hunt offices is discussed in greater detail in CE 2270 (if the WC found the truth as claimed, why do they make it so hard to find relevant documents then?). The woman Ruby took to the Hunt offices was Ms. Connie Trammel who had been a senior at the University of Texas in the school of Journalism in the spring of 1963 when she and other seniors came to Dallas. She would meet Jack Ruby and talk with him for a long time. She graduated and came to Dallas to look for work in mid-November 1963 and after three days or so called Jack Ruby to see if he needed any help. It mentions that Jack Ruby asked her if she was willing to get into “show business” (i.e. dance at his club), but she declined the offer. She thought she could get work as a hat check girl while she looked for a job in her own line of work. On November 20, 1963, she called him again and mentioned that she had an appointment with Lamar Hunt (how she got this appointment is NOT said) and was hoping Ruby may have had an acquaintance with Mr. Hunt that could help her chances. How she knew this from “one conversation” with him in April 1963 is not explained to us. This smells odd to me as it all seems to be based on one meeting prior to her move to Dallas.

This brings us back to Hunt’s denial about knowing Ruby. IF Ruby was just there on November 21, 1963, wouldn’t he at least know OF Ruby? How did a girl right out of college get an appointment with a major oil man so fast? IF she dropped the right name, it makes more sense. Did she say she knew Jack Ruby or was she referred by Jack Ruby? Was it just another in a long line of coincidences that Ruby had Hunt's literature on him when he shot LHO?
On November 21, 1963, Ruby would also spend time with A.D.A. Bill Alexander. What could they possibly have talked about? Ruby was quoted as saying he and Alexander “were great friends.” (Houston Chronicle, 1/30/64) This also should have made the WC sit up, but alas, they just seemed to ignore this point too. Given the fact that Alexander was all over the crime scenes on November 22, 1963, should have caused a red flag too as it is quite unusual for a A.D.A. to be so involved in the INVESTIGATION of a crime.
We also can’t forget the whole entrance into the DPD basement to shoot LHO. As we have seen previously in other posts, the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) said this about that event.
Quote on
…Ruby’s shooting of Oswald was NOT a spontaneous act in that it involved at least some premeditation. Similarly, the committee believed it was less likely that Ruby entered the police basement WITHOUT assistance, even though the assistance may have been provided with no knowledge of Ruby’s intentions…The Committee was troubled by the apparently UNLOCKED doors along stairway route and the REMOVAL of security guards from the area of the garage nearest the stairway shortly before the shooting,…There is also evidence that the Dallas Police Department WITHHELD relevant information from the Warren Commission concerning Ruby’s entry to the scene of Oswald’s transfer…(Emphasis mine)
