This is being written in an attempt to cover all topics in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (JFK) story. I am by no means saying any of this is true, but in this case who can say something isn’t out of hand considering all that is known about it?
What we do know is that something strange went on with JFK’s body as there are different versions of what it looked like from the staff at Parkland Hospital (PH) to those that saw it at Bethesda Naval Hospital (BNH). There even seems to be different photographs from the autopsy that aren’t the ones taken by the staff at BNH. For years researchers have tried to make sense of all of this. There has been discussions of body alteration and body switching. Some have posited that it was actually the body of Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit (JDT) that was at the autopsy.
The point is, no one knows what happened for sure. Those that might have known are either dead or not talking. The reason I bring this up is to point out that there are many areas of this case we don’t know what really happened, so try and keep an open mind when reading this information. Maybe it is true and maybe it isn’t, but let’s decide by doing more research instead of just deciding one way or another.
The name of John M. Liggett came to prominence in 2003 when it appeared in episode 7 of the series “The Men Who Killed Kennedy” entitled the “Smoking Guns.” We learned that Liggett worked at Restland Funeral Home and Mortuary in Dallas. Supposedly Liggett was considered the best by his fellow morticians in the area of reconstruction. He could remove the damage done by violence or trauma and make it appear that it had never happened. His most famous work was on actress Jayne Mansfield who had been beheaded, but the family wanted an open casket funeral.
This skill is what has tied him to the JFK assassination saga. What his actual role was, and how it was performed, is open to discussion however. It has been said that he performed surgery on JFK while on the airplane (presumably Air Force Two) as it flew from Dallas to Washington, D.C. This is the most common theory regarding Liggett, but there is another one. It comes from none other than Billie Sol Estes.
In his 2005 book, “Billie Sol Estes – A Texas Legend”, he presents a different scenario. In his book he tells us that Liggett was tasked with the job of locating a body similar to JFK’s ahead of time that had either been shot from behind or made to look like it had. After the assassination, Liggett left with the body and an assistant from Restland and headed to Love Field according to Estes, but it was not put on either Air Force One or Two. It was flown to Washington on a private jet instead.
During the flight to Washington Liggett was in contact with PH which updated him on JFK’s wounds. Estes said that it was important to the plan that both JFK’s body and the one Ligget was bringing arrive at the same time. The swearing-in ceremony (which was totally unnecessary) was designed to delay the departure of Air Force One.
Once the body arrived they used it to make photographs, X-rays and a complete brain from the cadaver. This false evidence, according to Estes, was substituted for some of JFK’s autopsy materials. Estes said the mix of evidence is what confused the situation. He also said that all the evidence was sent to the White House first, and they decided what would go to the WC and the National Archives (NA).
After Ligget was finished he flew back to Dallas. He told his wife and step-children that they were going on a trip. The family headed to Galveston. He was in such a hurry that he was stopped for speeding between Dallas and Austin. In Austin he stopped to see a friend of his and Estes said this man was CIA. He then headed for Galveston and checked into a hotel. He would watch television all weekend. After he witnessed Ruby shooting LHO he told his wife, “Now we can go back to Dallas.” (Billie Sol Estes, “Texas Legend”, pp. 155-157)

Estes received much of his inside information from Cliff Carter who was a lawyer and aide to Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ). None of this seems unreasonable to me, but there isn’t any firm proof that this happened. Since this is at a level where it could implicate people in the conspiracy it shouldn’t be a surprise that there is no firm evidence for any of this.
Ligget ties to Jay Bert Peck as well. Peck was a distant cousin of LBJ’s and supposedly looked and sounded a lot like him. According to Estes, Peck stood in for LBJ on a number of occasions. The most important time was on the evening of November 21, 1963. Supposedly while LBJ went to the Murchison residence to attend the meeting there about the plans for the next day, Peck stood-in for him at the hotel in Fort Worth (“Texas”) and made sure that he was seen by reporters, but he didn’t speak or answer any questions. He was told to circulate in the main dining room and the lobby. (Ibid. p. 157)
Peck’s resemblance to LBJ is confirmed by Time magazine (Newsweek too) as they mentioned him in an article published on August 2, 1968, about the film “House Of Seven Joys” starring Dean Martin and Elke Sommer. In the film the president is shown in a couple of scenes, but it isn’t LBJ. It’s Peck. Supposedly LBJ was angry about this as he didn’t want people to know that he had a double. The two scenes would be deleted and Peck would be dead in a matter of months.
Estes said it was due to Peck running up gambling debt and asking for more money. While he doesn’t state it in his book the reader can deduce that Peck may have been using his stand-in on November 21 as leverage for getting more money.
Estes said that Ligget was sent to silence Peck. On July 5, 1969, Ligget went to the Peck residence. He took Jay Bert Peck into the bedroom and shot him. Peck’s wife, Dorothy, was in the living room when this happened and Ligget told her that he killed himself. He had her tell the police this as well.
Since Ligget would be tied to an attempt to kill Dorothy in March 1974 it isn’t a leap to think that she was not keeping quiet about what happened to her husband. Ligget also felt she knew of his role in the assassination. (Ibid.)
Ligget knew another person that figures in the JFK assassination saga – David Ferrie. Ligget told his step-daughter, Debra Godwin, that he knew Ferrie since he had served in the Civil Air Patrol. Of course Lee Harvey Oswald had served in the Civil Air Patrol as well.
This all seems plausible to me. Estes said that Carter planned the whole thing for LBJ. That may be true, but LBJ was not the top guy as Estes claims. It went much higher than that in my opinion. LBJ has been dead for a long time and the cover-up continues so this seems like proof that he wasn’t the top person.
