The Warren Commission (WC) accused Lee Harvey Oswald (LHO) of two murders on November 22, 1963. He was supposed to have killed President John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Dallas Police officer J.D. Tippit (JDT), but the WC failed to present any evidence showing he did commit these murders. He was of course supposed to have committed both with NO assistance as he was pronounced to be a “loner.”
We have seen many times in this series incidents that show there was foreknowledge of what was to come, thus, the assassination of JFK could NOT have been committed by one person as claimed. We have also looked at some of the connections LHO had with various people and organizations that again belies the claim that he was a loner. Of course the most odd thing of all is that this “loner” had a wife and TWO CHILDREN.
This post will again look at some odd connections and actions by LHO in the summer of 1963 as we will finally cover the supposed visits by LHO to Jackson and Clinton, Louisiana (LA). There were multiple witnesses that said they saw Clay Shaw and David Ferrie there at the same time in an old black Cadillac. Why would LHO be going anywhere with these people? This is why the connnection (however slight it may be) with David Ferrie via the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is important in understanding the possible connections LHO may have had. David Ferrie was undeniably tied to the CIA in some way so this connection is intriguing.
You’ll have to decide for yourself on this one, was it the real LHO or another double or doppleganger impersonating him in Louisiana?

In either late August or early in September 1963 LHO was seen in Clinton, LA, by a number of people. He was first seen by barber Edwin McGehee as LHO entered his barbershop for a haircut. While in the barbershop LHO asked McGehee if there were any jobs available in Jackson and McGehee replied that, "All we've got is the hospital which is a mental hospital." Imagine what this would have looked like if he had gotten a job at the “mental hospital”. Mr. McGehee was NOT called by the WC, but he was called by Jim Garrison for the Clay Shaw trial. Here is the relevant portions of his testimony given before the court.
BY MR. ALCOCK:
Q: Now, Mr. McGehee, can you recall approximately when it was that you saw Leon Oswald?
A: This was -- as near as I can remember, it was in the -- we had some cool weather in the last of August and the early part of September. I barber by myself, and when it is cool I turn the air-conditioning off and keep the door open.
Q: Would that have been the latter part of August, early part of September, 1963?
A: Right.
Q: Now, at the time that Lee Harvey Oswald was in your barber shop, was anyone present besides yourself?
A: No.
Q: Were you able to see, Mr. McGehee, how Oswald came to the shop, whether he –
A: The door was open and I noticed this car drive up. It passed the door a little ways, not too far, where the back end was just a little past the shop, and I did not see the man get out, and the next thing I noticed, there was nobody on the street hardly, not anybody, as a matter of fact, and this man walked in the shop.
Q: Could you describe the car for us at all?
A: Yes, the car was -- it was an old car, it was battered, it was a dark colored car -- it might have been dark green -- but the make of it I just couldn't remember, it was an old car, real old.
Q: Now, Mr. McGehee, to the best of your recollection and knowledge, was there anyone else in that car?
A: Yes.
Q: Can you describe that person?
A: There was a woman sitting on the front seat -- this is after the man was getting a haircut I glanced at the car -- and in the back seat what I noticed was -- looked like a bassinet.
Q: A baby bassinet?
A: Right.
Q: Now, Mr. McGehee, had Oswald entered the shop before this car pulled up?
A: No, after.
How could LHO get out of a car when he did NOT know how to drive an automobile? Who was the woman that was seen in the car? Was the baby bassinet for June Oswald? If so, who was driving the automobile? These are all intriguing questions left unanswered by the WC who claimed to be on a “fact-finding mission”.
Q: Now, Mr. McGehee, did you give Lee Harvey Oswald a haircut on that occasion?
A: Yes.
Q: Approximately how long would that take?
A: About 15 minutes.
Q: And did you have a conversation with him at that time?
A: Yes.
Q: Mr. McGehee, do you know a gentleman by the name of Reeves Morgan?
A: Right.
Q: Did you know his occupation at that time?
A: Yes, he was State Representative in my Parish.
Q: Did you have occasion at any time to mention his name?
A: Yes, I referred Lee Oswald.
McGehee recommended that LHO get in touch with him because he felt he could help him with the application process at the state hospital. McGehee also suggested that it would help his chances if he registered to vote in the parish. According to McGehee LHO was “extremely surprised” to learn that it was a “mental hospital” that he was asking about, but said he was going to speak with Mr. Morgan about it. Luckily for us he too was called before the court at the Clay Shaw trial so we can see what he said about this meeting.
Q: (Exhibiting photograph to witness) Mr. Morgan, I will show you now a picture that the State has marked "S-1" for purposes of identification, and ask you if you recognize the individual in that picture.
A: Yes, sir.
Q: Do you know who that individual is?
A: This is the fellow that came there and introduced himself to me.
Q: What was his name?
A: Oswald.
So we see LHO visited his home to discuss this job opportunity. Notice this caution by the court to Mr. Morgan and think of how this would have handicapped the WC immensely if this applied to their testimony.
THE COURT: Let me caution the witness. Mr. Reeves, do not tell us what he told you. You can testify to what you said to him, not what he said to you. Understand?
Just imagine if this was applied to Marina Oswald, Mary Bledsoe, Ruth Paine, Michael Paine and the De Mohrenschildts. They were allowed to say “he said this or he said that” without him being there to counter any of it.
BY MR. SCIAMBRA:
Q: Do you know this individual's name now?
A: Yes, sir.
Q: What is it?
A: Lee Harvey Oswald, but I didn't know anything except Lee Oswald until after the --
Q: When did this individual come to your home?
A: Had it figured out as the latter part of August or either the first part of September, because I made no dates or no memorandums or nothing on it.
Q: Tell the Court what you told Lee Harvey Oswald that day that you talked to him in your home.
A: I told him that I could not help him get a job at the hospital ahead of any of my constituents, at the East Louisiana State Hospital, but I was not going to try to prevent him from getting a job, and I told him all the procedure he would have to go to get in position to get a job, about going and putting in his application and getting set up to take a Civil Service examination, and that you just didn't go over there and get a job and just go to work, you had to go through applications and take a Civil Service examination for a job in the electrical department or something like that….it wouldn't hurt if he was a registered voter up there…
Q: And approximately how long did you say you talked to Oswald that day?
A: Well, it wasn't too long, I would say maybe 20 minutes or 25, just talked along there. I wasn't wanting him to get the impression I was trying to rush him off or nothing.
Q: After the assassination of President Kennedy, did you see a picture of Lee Harvey Oswald on television or in the paper?
A: I saw it in the newspaper first, I believe. As well as I remember, the newspaper picture was the first one I saw.
Q: Did you recognize him?
A: Yes, sir.
Q: Where did you recognize him from?
A: From being at my house.
We see he spent between 20-25 minutes with this man who he said was LHO. He recognized the picture of him following the JFK assassination. He would report the incident to the Baton Rouge, LA FBI office, but it would be ignored.
Q: Did you ever tell this incident to anyone?
A: Well, yes, discussed it with several people around there, and I even called the FBI and told them.
Q: When did you call the FBI?
A: I would say that it was practically the next day after I recognized it, I believe it was the next day.
Q: Did the FBI ever send anybody to talk to you about this?
A: No, sir, they never did send anybody, because when I called them, when we got through talking I told him I was glad that they already knew he was up there in the vicinity. They already knew it. And he thanked me for my trouble of calling them.
This shows the FBI knew he was in Jackson, LA, thus the WC knew this, but NOTHING was done about it to find out how he got there and if he was accompanied by anyone. Why not? What were the FBI and subsequently the WC afraid of learning?
Henry Earl Palmer was in charge of the voter registration for the parish so LHO met him as well to see about registering. Palmer also was called before the court in the Clay Shaw trial.
Q: (Exhibiting photograph to witness) Now I show you a picture that the State has marked "S-1" for purposes of identification, and I ask you if you recognize the individual in this picture?
A: Yes, sir, I do.
Q: Is this the individual who came into your office that day?
A: It is.
Q: Do you know who is the individual in that picture?
A: Lee H. Oswald.
Q: Would you tell the Court what transpired when you talked to Oswald in your office.
A: When Mr. Oswald came in there and gave me the identification, ID card, I looked at the name on it, had Lee H. Oswald with a New Orleans address -- I don't remember what the address was. I asked him where he lived, and -- can I state what he said, where he lived?
Q: In reference to what he was trying to do, tell us what you told him.
A: He was trying to -- wanted a job at the hospital in Jackson.
Q: How long did you say you talked to Oswald at that –
A: Oswald was in the office approximately 15 or 20 minutes.
Q: Did you see Lee Harvey Oswald's picture on the television or in the newspaper after the assassination?
A: I was watching the television when they put him on the first time, and recognized him.
Q: Where did you recognize him from?
A: From the man that came in my office to register.
First of all, why did this "ID" not have the name "Alek Hidell" on it? Secondly, what identification of LHO's had a New Orleans address listed on it?
He did NOT recognize Clay Shaw however as the man he saw LHO with.
Q: Did you see Shaw's picture in the newspaper?
A: Yes, sir, I did.
Q: Did you recognize him?
A: No, sir.
That really doesn’t prove it wasn’t him though as Palmer testified to never seeing the faces of the two men in the black Cadillac.
Q: I see. Now, when you say these two men whom you have described, were they sitting in this black Cadillac, Mr. Palmer?
A: Yes, sir, they were.
Q: But you did get a good look at them?
A: No, sir, I didn't get a good look at them, I just saw the back of them, I didn't see the faces.
Q: You didn't see either man's face?
A: No, side view of the man on the right, and as far as the man on the left, I saw the back of his head and shoulders, just the back part right back here (indicating), that is all I can say.
Palmer may not have recognized him, but the Clinton, LA Town Marshall sure did. Mr. Palmer asked John Manchester to do a license check on the old model Cadillac everyone was looking at in Clinton. Marshall went to the driver’s side and asked the man behind the wheel for his driver’s license. This is what he told the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) about the incident.
Quote on
I walked over and as I would, or any police officer would do, I just checked the car out and I walked over and asked the driver would he please identify himself. He gave me his driver's license, and I looked at his driver's license and I asked him what his business was in town. He told me he was a representative of the International Trade Mart in New Orleans... (National Archives, HSCA I80-I 0 II6-I 0083, Numbered Files 0 I4670; HSCA Executive Session testimony of John Manchester.)

Obviously this would be more in line with Clay Shaw and NOT Guy Banister. It is unlikely that the man was Banister since Mr. Palmer said he knew him and would have recognized him if he were the man in the Cadillac.
Q: Do you know who the individual in that picture is?
A: Yes, I do.
Q: Who is it?
A: Mr. Banister.
Q: Where do you know Mr. Banister from?
A: I knew Mr. Banister in the Service in World War II.
Q: Is there any possibility that Mr. Banister could have been the person in that automobile?
A: I am sure I would have known Mr. Banister if I had seen him.
Q: Now, Mr. Palmer, in all honesty you would not testify, sir, that you could recognize Mr. Banister just by seeing the back of his head and his shoulders, would you, sir?
A: No, but I think if Guy Banister had been there I would have seen him, I would have recognized him.
This goes some way in eliminating Guy Banister from the discussion and places the onus on Clay Shaw. Here is what Marshal John Manchester told the court during the Clay Shaw trial.
Q: When did you recognize him?
A: After he was -- after Mr. Shaw was charged, then I got to -- I got to putting the pieces together that I had seen this man before somewhere.
Q: Now, you, of course, say that this Defendant here was the man that you saw in the Cadillac. Right?
A: Yes, sir, I have.
Q: Before coming today, to court today, and exclusive of this incident in Clinton, have you ever seen Mr. Clay Shaw before?
A: Yes, sir.
He was sure it was Clay Shaw that gave him his driver’s license on that day. If we look back at what he told the HSCA you will see he said the man said he was connected with the “International Trade Mart in New Orleans” and this again would point to Clay Shaw. Why would Clay Shaw be in Clinton (and Jackson), LA with LHO? We don’t know since neither the FBI or WC bothered to find out for us. I wonder why they ignored this lead?
When Marshall ran the plate it came back registered to a Jeff Biddison who was a long-time friend of Clay Shaw. Was this just another coincidence? Further corroboration for Manchester’s identification of Clay Shaw came from the Clinton Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) president Corrie Collins and CORE volunteer William Dunn as they both saw Manchester approach the black Cadillac and would say later on that it was Clay Shaw and David Ferrie in the automobile.
Q: Can you describe the man behind the wheel?
A: Yes, heavy built, gray hair. I would say he was between 40 and 50, somewhere in that area, and he had on a light color hat.
Q: Do you see the man behind the wheel in this courtroom today?
A: Yes.
Q: Would you point to him, please?
A: (Indicating) Right here.
MR. SCIAMBRA: Would you have the record reflect that the witness pointed to the Defendant Clay Shaw?
Q: (Exhibiting photograph to witness) I show you a picture that the State has marked for purposes of identification "S-3," and I ask you if you can identify or do you recognize the person in this picture?
A: Yes, this is the other man that was in the car.
Q: Do you know who this person is?
A: Yes, that is David Ferrie.
And:
Q: Can you describe the man behind the wheel?
A: I can. He was -- big shoulders, big man, and gray hair.
Q: Do you see that man in this courtroom today?
A: I do.
Q: Would you point him out, please?
A: (Indicating) Right here.
MR. SCIAMBRA: May we have the record reflect that the witness pointed to the Defendant before the bar, Clay Shaw?
Q: You say that this Defendant Clay Shaw was the man sitting behind that wheel? Is that correct?
A: That is right, that is right.
The HSCA would write this about what some of the witnesses saw in Clinton, LA.

If the witnesses were not only truthful but accurate as well in their accounts, they established an association of an undetermined nature between Ferrie, Shaw and Oswald less than 3 months before the assassination. (HSCAR, p. 143)

Palmer would ask the only white man in line for some identification and he presented a U.S. Navy I.D. card with the name LHO on it and an address of 10-something Camp Street, New Orleans, LA.
Q: When did the next white boy come in?
A: Probably one or two others came between him, and then he came. I asked him for his identification, and he pulled out a U.S. Navy ID card.
When LHO was arrested in Dallas, Texas, no such card was found on him as supposedly he had the Selective Service card with the name “Alek Hidell” on it instead.
LHO would fill out an application for the East Louisiana State Hospital and it would be seen by Maxine Kemp in late 1964 when she heard LHO’s name on the radio. This caused her to check the personnel files and she saw a file under the name “Lee Oswald” and she would review the file, but when she was interviewed by A.D.A. Andrew Sciambra of Jim Garrison’s office in 1967 she would have no memory of this application and the file was gone. (Jim Garrsion, On The Trail Of The Assassins (OTTOTA), p. 126)
What happened to the file? What was the big deal about him applying to this hospital? Perhaps it was the issue of how a non-driving LHO would get to Clinton and Jackson since it seemed he did NOT use a bus or train. How else could they show he got there? Certainly NOT in the company of Clay Shaw and David Ferrie. So they did NOT investigate this and in due course the paperwork disappeared.
What was the purpose of this whole trip and application anyway? Jim Garrison gave us the following explanation in his book OTTOTA. Garrison and his team came to the conclusion this was one more step in the "sheepdipping" process some group was putting LHO through. They would have LHO take a position at a mental hospital of all places--remember he was SURPRISED TO HEAR this is what type of hospital it was per McGehee--for a few weeks or a month, and this would show one more time how he was unstable and wandering as he would be unable to keep a job for very long. Obviously they could spin the mental hospital angle anyway they wanted as well later on too.

With a bit of luck and good orchestration, it might have been possible -- with a SWITCH of cards from "employee" to "patient" -- to have the right psychiatrist at Jackson describe the problems he had in "treating" this strange outpatient named Lee Oswald." (Ibid) (Emphasis mine)

Author John Armstrong has said in his book Harvey & Lee that this was LEE Oswald that went to Clinton and Jackson, LA. He refers to the HSCA testimony of Bobbie Dedon who was a nurse’s aid in 1963 at the hospital and she spoke with LHO and directed him to the personnel office to fill out his application.
Quote on
In 1978 the HSCA interviewed Bobbie Dedon and showed her photographs of Lee Harvey Oswald. After looking at the photographs Dedon said, "That man reminds me of Lee Harvey Oswald ..... They favor, and then they don't favor ..... this man has fuller lips, and this man has a wire mouth. Haircuts are different. Their ears are the same." (National Archives, HSCA I80-I 0089-I 0040, Numbered Files 008498, HSCA deposition of Bobbie Dedon.) (John Armstrong, Harvey & Lee, p. 581)

Armstrong says she has described the difference between Lee and Harvey, what do you think? He says it was Lee who was in Jackson and Clinton, LA with Clay Shaw and David Ferrie to impersonate LHO, but he too doesn’t seem to know why. Perhaps this part of the story was not needed, but at the time they did not know this. We will never know for sure, but it definitely ties to the mental hospital and the CORE angle. Remember that we have seen earlier in this series that a Vaughn Marlowe was being recruited as a possible assassin for Los Angeles in June 1963. He too had ties to CORE, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Socialists Workers Party (SWP) and the Fair Play For Cuba Committee (FPCC) as well. Is this just another coincidence or a well planned design? You will have to decide for yourself.
This post again shows things the WC and FBI had NO interest in exploring this information to see where it lead, thus, their final conclusion cannot be accurate or correct. This again sinks their conclusion and leaves open other options for what really happened on November 22, 1963.
